National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has made fresh allegations against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, claiming he attempted to obtain KSh300 million from China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) during his tenure in government.
Ichung’wah made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing journalists at Parliament grounds alongside lawmakers allied to the broad-based government.
According to the Kikuyu MP, the alleged demand was connected to issues dating back to the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of targeting the Chinese state-owned construction firm despite publicly criticising corruption.
He claimed the company declined the alleged request and maintained that its contracts were governed by Kenyan law.
Ichung’wah also alleged that Gachagua sought KSh10 billion while serving in government in order to help “fix Mount Kenya politics.” He did not provide evidence to support the claim during the press briefing.
The Majority Leader said the former Deputy President had repeatedly made accusations against others while, in his view, failing to account for his own conduct.
The Majority Leader further stated that CRBC contracts are subject to scrutiny by Kenyan institutions, including the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA). He argued that disputes involving government contracts should be handled through lawful oversight mechanisms rather than political channels.
Ichung’wah maintained that state agencies remain responsible for investigating any wrongdoing related to public projects.
During the same briefing, Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of making unsubstantiated allegations and attempting to undermine government institutions and security agencies for political reasons.
He said the former Deputy President had made numerous claims without presenting proof and was targeting officers tasked with carrying out their duties.
The latest accusations add to the widening political rift between Gachagua and leaders aligned to President William Ruto. Since leaving office, Gachagua has become one of the administration’s most vocal critics, frequently using public rallies, interviews and online platforms to challenge government officials.
The exchange is the latest sign of deepening divisions within the Kenya Kwanza political camp ahead of the 2027 General Election.
As of the time of publication, Rigathi Gachagua had not publicly responded to Ichung’wah’s allegations regarding CRBC or the alleged KSh10 billion demand.
The claims remain allegations made by the Majority Leader, and no court or investigative agency had publicly confirmed the accusations at the time of reporting.
