Google has announced that its artificial intelligence assistant Gemini has exceeded one billion monthly users, marking a significant milestone for the technology company as the global race to dominate AI accelerates.

Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai revealed the figure on Tuesday, saying Gemini had become Google’s fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google product to reach the one-billion-user mark.

Google said the number refers specifically to people using the Gemini app and web experience each month. It does not include users interacting with AI features embedded across Google Search, Gmail, Workspace and other Google products.

The announcement nevertheless demonstrates the scale Google can achieve by linking Gemini to an ecosystem already used by billions of people worldwide.

Gemini had roughly 750 million monthly users at the end of 2025, meaning it has added hundreds of millions of users in less than a year.

The rapid expansion comes as Google invests heavily in AI to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

Industry analysts say the pace of growth reflects how quickly AI assistants have moved from experimental technology to mainstream consumer tools.

The milestone arrives during an intense period of competition among leading AI companies. OpenAI has continued expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities and user base, while Anthropic has gained traction with businesses and developers through Claude.

Chinese technology firms such as DeepSeek and Alibaba are also investing aggressively in AI, adding further pressure to American technology companies.

The battle is increasingly focused not only on chatbot popularity but also on coding tools, reasoning systems, enterprise applications and autonomous AI agents.

Google’s biggest strength remains its enormous existing user base. Gemini is available as a standalone app and web service, but it is also being integrated across products including Search, Android, Gmail, Maps and YouTube.

That distribution network gives Google immediate access to a vast audience without requiring users to adopt an entirely new platform.

Technology researchers have noted that the large number of Gemini interactions also provides Google with valuable feedback that can help improve future AI models and services.

The announcement comes as Google and its rivals spend billions of dollars on data centres, specialised AI chips and research infrastructure.

Google DeepMind, the division responsible for Gemini, has been central to those efforts as the company seeks to develop more capable AI systems while defending its position in search and consumer technology.

The industry is increasingly moving toward AI systems capable of handling complex tasks with less human supervision. Companies are investing in AI agents that can use software tools, complete multi-step assignments and automate parts of knowledge work.

For Google, Gemini’s one-billion-user milestone is both a commercial achievement and a strategic signal that it remains one of the leading contenders in the next phase of the global artificial intelligence race.
