  • Housing PS Charles Hinga says he lost 35 kilogrammes within a year after advice from President William Ruto.
  • Hinga revealed he once weighed 121kg and decided to act after a conversation with the Head of State.
  • He linked his personal transformation to the government’s plan to clean up and rebuild Nairobi.
  • The remarks were made during Alliance High School’s 100-year celebrations.

Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga has opened up about a life-changing moment shortly after his appointment. According to him, President William Ruto challenged him to deal with his weight.

Hinga said the President made it clear that his ability to deliver was not in question, but there was one issue he needed to address. At first, he thought it was a light remark. However, he later realised the message was serious.

At the time, he weighed 121 kilogrammes. One year later, he says he is 35 kilogrammes lighter.

Hinga admitted that his weight often became a topic on social media. He said whenever he engaged Kenyans online, and critics had no response to his arguments, some would mock his size.

The PS described his weight-loss journey as proof that determination can produce results. He said people who doubt bold promises should not underestimate what focus and discipline can achieve.

Hinga connected his transformation to the government’s plan to improve Nairobi. He recalled the President expressing disappointment about the state of the capital city, pointing to garbage and damaged roads.

Speaking during a recent tour of Westlands Constituency, Hinga mentioned ongoing projects aimed at restoring order and improving public spaces. These include the construction of 314 classrooms and efforts to clean roads across the city.

He noted that just as he managed to change within a year, the government has set a six-month target to improve Nairobi’s condition.

Hinga made his remarks on Sunday while attending the centenary celebrations of Alliance High School alongside President Ruto.

During the event, the President praised the institution for shaping leaders known for discipline, excellence, and service. He said he has worked with many alumni and considers them among the best in the country.

President Ruto announced that the government will continue supporting Alliance High School. He outlined an investment of Sh550 million. This includes Sh60 million for 40 classrooms, another Sh60 million for a sports academy, and Sh200 million to upgrade roads around the school.

At nearby Alliance Girls School, the government has allocated Sh155 million for a dormitory that will house 640 students, as well as Sh40 million for 24 classrooms.

As Alliance High celebrated a century of service, the President congratulated the school and encouraged it to continue upholding its motto, “Strong To Serve.”
