  • ODM has rejected recent leadership changes announced within the Azimio coalition.
  • The party says key coalition partners were left out of the decision-making process.
  • ODM argues the move violated the Azimio agreement rules.
  • Other affiliate parties have also opposed the changes.
  • The dispute now awaits action from the Registrar of Political Parties.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has formally opposed recent leadership changes made within the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition.

The party says the changes, announced under the authority of Azimio Council Chairperson Uhuru Kenyatta, are not valid and should not take effect.

In a letter sent to the Registrar of Political Parties, John Cox Lorianokou, ODM asked that the changes be halted immediately.

The party stated that its leadership, including ODM Party Leader Dr Oburu Oginga, was neither informed nor involved in the process, which it says is a clear breach of the coalition agreement.

ODM maintains that the Azimio agreement does not allow one individual to make major leadership decisions alone.

According to the party, any changes must be agreed upon by leaders of the coalition’s main constituent parties, including ODM, Jubilee, and Wiper. ODM argues that this requirement was ignored.

ODM’s position has been echoed by other Azimio-affiliated parties.

National Liberal Party (NLP) Secretary General Ishmael Omondi Koyoo also wrote to the Registrar, accusing coalition partners of sidelining affiliates through an irregular meeting.

Koyoo stated that the meeting used to approve the changes did not follow agreed procedures.

He warned that the resolutions sent to the Registrar undermine the coalition’s values of openness and fairness and urged the office not to act on what he termed unlawful decisions.

The contested restructuring saw Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka named as Azimio coalition leader.

Suba North MP Caroli Omondi was appointed Secretary General, while Philip Kisia took up the Executive Director role. Former officials Junet Mohamed and Raphael Tuju were dropped from their previous positions.

With key coalition members rejecting the changes, Azimio now faces internal tension over leadership and decision-making.

The matter now rests with the Registrar of Political Parties, whose next steps could shape the coalition’s future direction.
