Kasarani Member of Parliament Ronald Karauri has declared his intention to contest for Nairobi Governor in the upcoming 2027 General Election. The legislator said persistent leadership issues in the city motivated his decision.
Speaking to the media, Karauri expressed confidence that he could improve the city’s performance and resolve long-standing service delivery problems. “Leadership is the main problem in Nairobi. With the support of the people of Kasarani, I have decided to run for governor,” he said. “If elected, Nairobi residents will see real change.”
Karauri emphasised that managing Nairobi should not be overly complicated, pointing to the county’s substantial budget as a tool for effective governance. He highlighted his experience as a businessman with several ventures, which he believes equips him to oversee the city’s administration efficiently.
“We are focusing on small complaints. Nairobi leadership is not difficult because the county has resources; it’s about prioritising them correctly,” he added.
Karauri joins a growing list of aspirants eyeing the city’s top seat. Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced his candidacy in October 2025, pledging to “clean up” Nairobi and tackle mismanagement.
Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, also confirmed his intentions to run. Despite acknowledging that he may not secure the ODM ticket, Babu said he would pursue his gubernatorial ambitions independently while respecting party leadership.
Journalist and political analyst Tony Gachoka has thrown his hat into the ring as well, joining KANU and formally announcing his bid for the Nairobi governorship in June 2025.
With multiple high-profile candidates entering the race, Nairobi voters are set for a competitive contest. Candidates are highlighting their plans to improve governance, enhance service delivery, and tackle the city’s persistent challenges.
