Popular American content creator Darren Watkins Jr., widely known as iShowSpeed, has spoken about his recent trip to Kenya, calling it one of the most surprising moments of his career.
In an interview with Yahoo Sports, the YouTuber admitted he did not expect the kind of reception he received in Nairobi. According to him, the turnout during his livestream sessions left him in shock.
He estimated that around 30,000 people gathered in the city just to see him stream and interact with fans. The experience, he said, was unlike anything he had witnessed before.
iShowSpeed noted that he had never drawn such a crowd in any other country and said the support he received in Africa caught him off guard.
The streamer landed in Kenya on Sunday, January 11, and departed the following day, January 12. Despite the short visit, his schedule was packed with activities across Nairobi and beyond.
His first major stop was at the famous Carnivore Restaurant in Lang’ata, where he sampled different local meals while greeting excited supporters.
From Lang’ata, he headed to the Mukuru Kwa Njenga affordable housing project. There, he met Gen Z Goliath and joined young people in a lively basketball session.
At Upper Hill School, the focus shifted to athletics. iShowSpeed trained briefly with Olympic javelin champion Julius Yego before later taking part in a rugby game with students.
He also stepped into the kitchen to try preparing Kenyan staples such as ugali and chapati, showing interest in local culture beyond entertainment.
The tour continued with visits to some of the capital’s best-known sites. He stopped by the Giraffe Centre, toured Nairobi National Park, and rode a camel at Uhuru Park.
At Kenyatta Market, he enjoyed nyama choma and received artwork from local painters who presented him with custom portraits.
His city experience also featured a special drive with rally driver Ishmael Azeli to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The day ended with a helicopter ride that offered him wide views of Nairobi’s skyline.
Before leaving the country, iShowSpeed travelled to Maasai Mara National Park on Monday, adding wildlife exploration to his Kenyan adventure.
Though brief, the visit clearly left a strong impression on the American YouTuber. From record-breaking crowds to cultural experiences, his time in Kenya became a moment he says he will not forget anytime soon.
