Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed an immediate investigation into a security scare that occurred during a public function attended by President William Ruto in Wajir County.
The incident happened on February 12, 2026, during the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the President and other leaders present were not harmed.
Witnesses said the President was about to finish his speech when a man suddenly approached from the side of the podium and moved quickly toward him.
Members of the Presidential security team reacted without delay. They subdued the individual and escorted him away from the stage.
The event proceeded normally after the brief disruption.
IG Kanja has now formed a special team to examine what happened. The team has been given three days to complete its work and submit findings.
The inquiry will look into possible weaknesses in security procedures and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents in future.
In its statement, the National Police Service said officers acted swiftly to control the situation and maintain order.
The Service also reaffirmed its duty to protect citizens and national leaders during public events.
As investigations begin, authorities are expected to provide further details once the probe is concluded.
