Ghana Premier League goalkeeper Lawrence Osei has reportedly walked away from professional football after relocating to the United States.
The 30-year-old, who turns out for Heart of Lions and has previously been involved with the Ghana national team setup, is said to have left Ghana quietly despite being an active player in the ongoing league season.
Reports indicate that Osei had recently extended his contract with Heart of Lions until 2027.
At the time of his departure, he was expected to be at home serving a suspension due to accumulated yellow cards. Instead, he is said to have traveled abroad after securing a US visa, without notifying club officials, teammates, or head coach Bashir Hayford.
Osei later shared a TikTok video showing parts of his journey from Ghana to the United States.
One clip showed him clearing snow, accompanied by the caption: “Left home with a dream, now chasing it.” Sources say he has taken up a cleaning job, earning between $3,000 and $3,275 per month.
The reported monthly earnings in the US are said to be more than GH₵50,000, a sharp contrast to the roughly $246 (about GH₵2,700) he allegedly earned as a Premier League footballer in Ghana.
The figures have sparked fresh debate about player welfare and pay in local leagues.
Osei’s move has drawn strong reactions across social media.
Some see it as a clear sign of the financial struggles facing footballers in Ghana, while others have applauded his choice to seek stability and better pay outside the game.
It is still not clear whether Osei plans to return to football in the US or elsewhere.
However, reports suggest he may have fully stepped away from the sport to focus on building a new life through work, choosing opportunity over passion in pursuit of a better future.
