- Taifa Gas LPG terminal in Mombasa is set to start operations by March or early April 2026.
- The project will boost LPG storage capacity by 30,000 metric tonnes.
- Over 120 jobs are expected to be created in the first phase.
- The facility aims to lower gas prices and improve supply stability.
The Sh16 billion Taifa Gas LPG terminal in Mombasa is now in its final stages and is expected to begin operations by late March or early April 2026.
Investments, Trade, and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui confirmed the timeline during an inspection tour of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone on January 29, 2026.
Once fully operational, the terminal will add 30,000 metric tonnes of LPG storage and distribution capacity. Plans are already in place to expand the facility further to 45,000 metric tonnes in the future.
The added capacity is expected to ease pressure on supply chains and help stabilise cooking gas availability across the country.
The project is projected to create at least 120 direct jobs in its initial phase. Beyond employment, the terminal is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional gas supply centre, serving neighbouring countries.
This move aligns with the government’s goal of expanding regional trade and industrial growth.
By increasing storage and improving distribution efficiency, the terminal is expected to help reduce the cost of cooking gas for households.
The project directly supports the government’s clean energy plan, which aims to shift more families from traditional fuels to safer and cleaner LPG.
The Taifa Gas project has moved forward after overcoming several court challenges raised by residents and environmental groups.
A recent attempt to stop construction was dismissed by the National Environment Tribunal, clearing the way for completion.
President William Ruto is expected to officially commission the LPG terminal once construction is completed, with the launch planned for March 2026.
The facility is set to become one of the largest LPG infrastructure projects in the region.
