Police in Kirinyaga County are hunting for a 40-year-old woman suspected of killing her lover in a violent confrontation that shocked residents on Christmas Day.
The incident happened at Muragara Shopping Centre in Ndia Sub-County, turning what was meant to be a festive day into tragedy.
The deceased has been identified as Peter Mwangi Wanyeki, aged 52. Witnesses say he was drinking at a local bar with the suspect, Edith Muthoni, when a heated argument broke out.
According to those present, the quarrel started over a KSh 60 alcohol bill. The disagreement quickly escalated, drawing attention from other patrons inside the bar.
Moments later, the situation turned fatal.
Eyewitnesses told police that the woman allegedly picked up a knife that was being used to prepare food during the Christmas celebrations.
She is said to have stabbed Wanyeki in the chest, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene.
Residents described the incident as sudden and disturbing, noting that no one expected the argument to end in death.
Wanyeki’s family said they were together celebrating Christmas when they received a phone call informing them of his death.
They added that they knew the suspect personally, as she comes from Kandegwa village, not far from their home, making the incident even more painful for them to process.
Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Jos Mudavadi confirmed the incident and said officers had launched an intensive manhunt for the suspect.
“The suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident, and efforts are ongoing to arrest her,” Mudavadi said.
The victim’s body has since been moved to a local mortuary as investigations continue.
