Panic erupted at Kahawa Garrison after a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier was shot dead in an incident whose circumstances remain unclear.
The shooting happened as the soldier allegedly attempted to exit the military camp through a section of the perimeter fence bordering Githurai, triggering alarm among guard personnel on duty.
According to preliminary reports, the sentries intercepted the soldier and ordered him to stop. However, he reportedly ignored several commands to halt.
The guards then fired warning shots into the air, but the soldier allegedly continued moving toward the fence. It was at this point that the sentries opened fire, fatally wounding him.
Military authorities claim the soldier was found in possession of suspected stolen items at the time of the incident.
Among the items recovered were gas cylinders, a television set, and personal documents, which were allegedly being ferried out of the camp illegally.
Sources within the military identified the deceased as a Signal Battalion soldier who had been deployed in Garissa.
Following the shooting, his body was moved to a Nairobi mortuary as military police launched investigations into the incident.
The Kenya Defence Forces have described the incident as unfortunate and confirmed that a comprehensive probe is underway to establish what exactly transpired and whether standard procedures were followed.
