  • Pastor Victor Kanyari says he may join politics in the 2027 elections
  • He plans to seek office using President William Ruto’s UDA party
  • His large church following and past support work are his main motivations

Salvation Healing Ministry leader Pastor Victor Kanyari has openly suggested that he could run for political office in the 2027 general elections. Speaking during a recent church service in Nairobi, the preacher said he sees himself entering politics in the next election cycle.

He told his congregation that his decision would be driven by the help he has offered many Kenyans over the years and the strong support base within his church. Kanyari said he would seek the seat using the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.

Kanyari’s church is located along Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi and attracts both physical and online audiences. Through live services and social media, he has built a wide following across the country.

Although his ministry faced major controversy in 2014 following an exposé on miracle seed planting, Kanyari later reopened the church and continued his work with a renewed approach.

This is not the first time Kanyari’s name has been linked to politics. Earlier this year, a group of youth from Mathare publicly endorsed him for higher office, with some even urging him to consider a presidential bid. At the time, he avoided making a firm commitment.

His latest remarks mark a shift, especially after he openly criticised the UDA government in 2024 and advised his followers not to vote for it. His recent comments suggest a change in political direction.

Kenya has a history of pastors and public figures stepping into politics, with mixed outcomes. As the 2027 elections draw closer, more non-traditional candidates are expressing interest in elective seats.

UDA has been conducting grassroots activities to strengthen its base, and individuals with strong public followings are increasingly finding space within the party.

Kanyari has also been in the public eye recently due to personal issues. He lost his former wife, gospel singer Betty Bayo, last month. The two share children, and he has spoken openly about custody discussions. He also recently received an award recognising him as one of the most influential pastors.

Online reactions to his political talk have been divided. Some dismiss it lightly, while others believe his church following could translate into votes, especially in Nairobi, where contests are often tight.

So far, Kanyari has not revealed which position he plans to contest. Whether it will be a parliamentary seat, the Senate, or another office remains unclear. He has maintained that his main aim is to help people, a role his church already plays through aid programs and large public events.

As 2027 approaches, his comments have added him to the growing list of personalities being watched closely. Whether he follows through or not, his remarks have already stirred conversation about faith leaders stepping into Kenya’s political arena.
