- Paqueta was sent off after two bookings for dissent during West Ham’s defeat to Liverpool.
- The Brazilian apologised but says the punishment was unfair.
- He accuses the FA of failing to support him during the spot-fixing probe.
- Nuno says Paqueta is sad, struggling mentally, but determined to move forward.
West Ham star Lucas Paqueta left the pitch in frustration on Sunday after receiving two quick yellow cards for dissent during the 2–0 loss to Liverpool.
The midfielder argued with referee Darren England, and even his teammates could not calm him down before he was finally shown a red card.
After the match, Paqueta posted an apology to West Ham fans and fellow players. However, he also insisted that what happened on the pitch did not deserve a sending-off.
The Brazilian used the moment to criticise the Football Association, saying the body offered him no psychological support during the long spot-fixing investigation.
Paqueta was cleared of four charges in July, avoiding what could have been a lifetime ban.
He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and says the emotional pressure of the case affected his reactions.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s match against Manchester United, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said Paqueta is deeply affected by the incident.
“He’s not okay, and he’s suffering. He’s disappointed and sad, but he realises the mistake he made,” Nuno said.
The coach added that many people do not understand the level of stress footballers face, but he believes Paqueta will overcome the moment.
Paqueta joined West Ham from Lyon in 2022 and remains under contract until 2027.
Despite transfer rumours, Nuno stressed that the player is settled and wants to keep playing for the club.
“He is willing to move forward, to put this aside and continue to play football,”
Nuno said, noting that the full squad is supporting Paqueta.
