A fresh political storm is brewing inside the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following a report by People Daily published on Saturday, December 27, 2025, pointing to a possible shake-up in the party’s top leadership.

According to the publication, a young and upcoming politician is allegedly being prepared to take over the powerful ODM Secretary General position currently held by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, as internal tensions deepen.

Sources quoted in the report claim that some senior ODM officials are increasingly unhappy with Sifuna’s hardline opposition to the Broad-Based Government (BBG) arrangement.

The BBG deal saw several ODM leaders secure influential positions within President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, a move Sifuna has openly questioned and criticised.

This firm stance has reportedly rubbed key party figures the wrong way, especially at a time when ODM is said to be weighing fresh power-sharing talks ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Insiders now suggest that discussions are ongoing within ODM circles on whether to suspend or even expel Sifuna from the party.

The report indicates that such a move could come at a critical moment, particularly if the party formally decides to deepen cooperation with President Ruto’s camp as 2027 draws closer.

In a possible succession plan, youthful politician and activist Kasmuel Mac Oure has emerged as the name being floated to fill the vacuum should Sifuna be pushed out or choose to leave.

Sources say Mac Oure is being positioned to take over the ODM Secretary General or spokesperson role, with party strategists believing his appointment could help ODM reconnect with Gen Z voters.

According to the report, ODM believes that bringing in Mac Oure would help the party capture the energy and support of young Kenyans, a voting bloc that continues to shape national politics.

His growing online presence and activism are seen as assets in appealing to a generation that values bold messaging and direct engagement.

In recent months, Mac Oure has been one of the loudest critics of Edwin Sifuna. He has repeatedly accused the senator of betraying ODM ideals and working against party unity.

He has also openly challenged Sifuna’s resistance to the ODM–UDA cooperation, at times daring him to resign and quit the party altogether.

The unfolding developments highlight a party at a defining crossroads, torn between maintaining ideological purity and embracing political pragmatism ahead of 2027.

Whether Sifuna survives the pressure or a youthful face takes over may shape ODM’s direction in the coming years.
