The football fraternity across the country has been thrown into deep sorrow after the passing of Justin Okiring, a former head coach of Trans Nzoia Falcons and a highly respected figure in school and women’s football.

According to early reports, Okiring was attacked on the evening of Saturday, December 13, near the Trans Nzoia–West Pokot border. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Wamalwa Kijana Referral Hospital in Kitale, where he had been receiving treatment.

Sadly, he later succumbed to the injuries while still admitted to the hospital.

While the area is known for bandit activity, sources close to the matter indicated that the attack was likely carried out by people known to the coach. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed Okiring’s death in a statement released on Tuesday, December 16, expressing condolences to his family and the wider football community.

“Football Kenya Federation mourns the passing of Justin Okiring, former Head Coach of Trans Nzoia Falcons,” the statement read.
“FKF extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Trans Nzoia Falcons fraternity during this difficult time.”

Okiring was widely admired for his practical and disciplined coaching style. He served as head coach of the women’s side, Trans Nzoia Falcons, for several months before leaving the role in 2023.

However, much of his legacy was built in school football. He enjoyed a successful spell at Wiyeta Girls, where he guided the team to several national titles.

One of his proudest achievements came in 2017, when he led Wiyeta Girls to victory at the East Africa Secondary School Games (FEASSSA), cementing his status as one of the most successful high school football coaches in the region.

Beyond trophies, Okiring is remembered for his role in nurturing young talent. Several Harambee Starlets players passed through his hands, including Jentrix Shikangwa, Nelly Sawe and Mwanahalima Adam.

His death leaves a big gap in Kenyan football, especially in grassroots and women’s development, where his impact will be felt for many years.

As tributes continue to pour in, Justin Okiring is being remembered not just as a coach but as a mentor who shaped careers and inspired countless young players.
