  • DIG Gilbert Masengeli donates KSh100,000 to AFC Leopards after derby win.
  • Leopards defeated Gor Mahia 1–0 at Nyayo Stadium.
  • Club says the gift will support bonuses and training costs.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli caused excitement moments after AFC Leopards shocked Gor Mahia with a 1–0 win in the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium. The police boss, a known Ingwe supporter, went straight to the Leopards’ dressing room after the final whistle and handed club officials KSh100,000 in cash.

Sources within the club said he described the money as a small way of thanking the team for lifting the spirits of supporters and restoring pride to the Leopards family.

AFC Leopards ended a long, painful run in the derby with a 26th-minute goal from Julius Masaba. The victory pushed the team to sixth in the FKF Premier League standings and sparked celebrations across the country as fans marked their first derby win in six years.

Club chairman Bonface Ambani welcomed the donation, calling it a timely encouragement as the team enters the festive period. He praised Masengeli for standing with the club even in difficult seasons.

Masengeli watched the match from the VIP area with senior government officials. His open support for the 12-time champions has never been a secret, and videos of him gifting the players quickly spread online. Leopards fans applauded the gesture, saying it showed genuine commitment from a top official who has supported the club for years.

The KSh100,000 is expected to help clear part of the players’ pending bonuses and fund upcoming training sessions. Leopards will play Kenya Police away on December 12.

On the other side, Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor admitted that wasted chances in the first half cost them the match. He, however, promised that the team will bounce back strongly when league action returns in January.

The Mashemeji Derby once again lived up to its reputation as Kenya’s biggest football rivalry, drawing a near-full stadium and millions watching from home. For Leopards supporters, the win and the surprise gift from DIG Masengeli, made December 7, 2025, a memorable date in club history.
