- Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Khamasi has passed away
- He served two terms between 1997 and 2007
- Khamasi retired quietly after losing in the 2007 elections
- He remained a respected elder and advisor in Kakamega
- His death follows recent losses of Cyrus Jirongo and Dr Kibunguchy
Kakamega County has been thrown into fresh grief following the death of former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Khamasi, coming just weeks after the passing of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo.
The sad news was confirmed by current Shinyalu MP Fredrick Ikana, who praised Khamasi as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to the constituency and the larger Kakamega region will not be forgotten.
Daniel Khamasi served the people of Shinyalu for two straight terms between 1997 and 2007. He first entered Parliament on a Ford Kenya ticket before retaining his seat in 2002 under the NARC party, during the wave that ushered in a new political era.
However, his parliamentary journey came to an end in the 2007 General Election, when he lost the seat to Charles Lugano of ODM. After that defeat, Khamasi chose to step away from elective politics and live a quiet life away from the public spotlight.
Even after retiring from active politics, Khamasi never lost his standing in the community. He remained a respected elder and advisor, with many leaders regularly seeking his guidance on political and social matters.
In recent months, he was spotted holding meetings with senior figures, including Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and Senator Boni Khalwale, a clear sign that his voice still carried weight within Kakamega’s political space.
Khamasi’s death adds to a growing list of losses in Kakamega County. Just weeks ago, the region lost former Lugari MPs Cyrus Jirongo and Dr Enoch Kibunguchy, leaving residents deeply shaken.
Jirongo is scheduled to be laid to rest today at his Lumakanda home in Lugari Constituency, as the county continues to mourn its fallen leaders.
As condolence messages continue to pour in, leaders and residents alike have described Daniel Khamasi as a calm, wise and experienced leader who served with humility and commitment. Many say his legacy will live on through the people he mentored and the community he served.
