Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has narrowly escaped death following a tragic road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people. The incident occurred on Monday morning along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near Makun area in Ogun State, police have confirmed.
According to preliminary reports from Nigerian authorities, the Lexus SUV Joshua was travelling in was involved in a serious collision with a stationary truck. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated that the vehicle may have been moving at high speed and lost control during an overtaking attempt.
Police say investigations are ongoing to fully establish how the accident happened.

Photos shared widely on social media show Joshua sitting inside the badly damaged car, surrounded by broken glass. The boxer was shirtless at the time, raising concern among fans. Police later confirmed that he sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is said to be in stable condition.
Joshua, a British citizen with Nigerian roots, was seated at the back of the vehicle when the crash occurred.
Sadly, two passengers died instantly in the crash. Witnesses said one victim was seated next to the driver, while the second was sitting close to Joshua. Early reports suggest both victims were foreign nationals, though their identities are yet to be made public.
Joshua’s long-time promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed that the boxer was in Nigeria on a private family visit when the accident happened. Speaking to Daily Mail Sport, Hearn said efforts were ongoing to reach Joshua directly.
“We are trying to contact Anthony. We don’t want to speculate too much, but from the images, it appears he is okay,” Hearn said.
The accident comes shortly after Joshua enjoyed a return to winning ways with a knockout victory over Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed fight held in Miami. The win followed a tough spell, including a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
Joshua has also been linked to a possible blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury, a fight that continues to excite boxing fans worldwide.
