Nigeria booked their place in the African regional playoff final for the 2026 World Cup after beating Gabon 4–1 in extra time at Stade Moulay Hassan in Morocco. The Super Eagles produced a strong finish after a dramatic end to normal time.
Nigeria took the lead in the 78th minute. Akor Adams punished a poor defensive mistake, rounded goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba, and scored into an empty net.
Gabon equalised in the 88th minute. Mario Lemina’s long-range shot took a deflection and beat Stanley Nwabali at the near post. The late goal pushed the match into extra time.
Just before the final whistle, Victor Osimhen missed a big chance when he went through on goal but sent his shot wide.
In the 51st minute, Denis Bouanga delivered a free kick into Nigeria’s box. Gabon players appealed for a penalty after Aaron Appindangoyé appeared to be pulled by Bright Osayi-Samuel. After more than five minutes of VAR review, the referee decided not to award the penalty, shocking the Gabon players.
Nigeria showed more energy and quality in extra time. Chidera Ejuke scored first, followed quickly by Victor Osimhen, who made it 3–1. Osimhen then added another goal in the second period of extra time to put the result beyond doubt.
Nigeria will play the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon in Sunday’s final. The winner will represent Africa at the inter-continental playoff tournament in March in Mexico, one step away from a place at the 2026 World Cup.
