Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen spoke out on Friday, November 28, over the violence witnessed during Thursday’s by-elections.
“We have taken note of isolated incidents of violence perpetrated by political goons in yesterday’s by-elections. Security agencies have already swung into action, and all the perpetrators and their sponsors will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law,” Murkomen said.
He emphasised that the government will not tolerate politically instigated chaos and that all culprits will face justice.
The National Police Service (NPS) reported that officers in Khwisero disrupted an attempt to transport weapons into a polling area.
During routine patrols in Kisa East Ward, police intercepted a white Toyota Hilux (registration KCM 707J) carrying crude weapons, including stones and clubs.
“Police officers in Khwisero intercepted a vehicle carrying a cache of weapons in the Munjiti area while on patrol during the Kisa East Ward by-election,” the NPS said.
Four suspects found in the vehicle were arrested and are currently in custody, awaiting processing and court arraignment.
In Homa Bay, a manhunt was launched after MP Peter Kaluma was attacked at Agoro Sare Primary School during the Kasipul Constituency by-election.
The operation led to multiple arrests and the recovery of weapons:
Five vehicles and two motorcycles were intercepted.
Sixteen suspects were arrested.
Weapons recovered included ten pangas, five knives, a rungus, and stones.
“Following the attack on Hon. Peter Kaluma, police launched an intensive manhunt for the suspected perpetrators. The operation led to the arrest of sixteen suspected armed thugs,” the NPS said.
All suspects are being held in custody as investigations continue ahead of arraignment in court.
