The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reclaimed public assets worth Ksh1.4 billion in Mombasa County. A standout property, the 4.8-acre Hobley Estate valued at Ksh500 million, has been cleared and is now ready for the construction of 720 government housing units.

“The recovered properties are earmarked for public utility use by various government institutions,” EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Other recovered plots include a KSh104 million parcel for the Kenya Airports Authority and a KSh50 million site for Kenya Railways, all intended to serve public institutions and community projects.

The EACC emphasised that the Mombasa recoveries are part of a wider national effort. Currently, the commission is pursuing the recovery of approximately Ksh10.3 billion in additional assets through court proceedings and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

“We remain committed to ensuring that public assets are returned to their rightful use for the benefit of all Kenyans,” the commission stated.

This announcement comes after a notable recovery last month, when the EACC reclaimed a 17-acre piece of land worth Ksh2.8 billion illegally excised from Karura Forest 27 years ago. The Nairobi Environment and Land Court ruled that the land, originally designated for a teachers’ college and forest preservation, had been unlawfully allocated to a former minister and later sold to private developers.

The Mombasa recoveries mark a significant step toward enhancing public housing and institutional infrastructure, demonstrating EACC’s continued commitment to protecting public resources.
