- UDA Party has given Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale two weeks to defend his support for a rival candidate in the Malava by-election.
- The party accuses him of disloyalty and breaching its constitution and code of conduct.
- Khalwale is said to have openly campaigned for DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako.
- The senator claims his actions were motivated by UDA’s neglect of the late MP Malulu Injendi’s family.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party has written to Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, demanding that he explain his actions after publicly supporting a rival candidate in the upcoming Malava Constituency by-election.
In a letter dated Tuesday, October 14, 2025, the party’s Disciplinary Committee said Khalwale’s recent political activities go against UDA’s constitution and code of conduct. The committee accused him of openly campaigning for a candidate from a different party, a move it described as disloyal and in direct conflict with the ruling party’s interests.
According to the letter, Khalwale’s actions amount to allegiance to another political party. The committee said his conduct was “vocal, conspicuous and substantial,” adding that it demonstrated a lack of loyalty to the UDA party, which sponsored him to his current Senate seat.
“Your participation clearly shows allegiance to another political party and constitutes conduct unbecoming and disloyalty to UDA, which nominated you as Kakamega Senator,” the letter read in part.
The disciplinary team warned that such behaviour breaches the party’s code of conduct and could lead to severe disciplinary action if not justified within the stipulated time.
UDA’s disciplinary committee has invoked Articles 68 and 69 of the party’s constitution to compel Khalwale to “show cause” why action should not be taken against him.
“You have fourteen (14) days to respond and explain why sanctions should not be imposed against you,” the letter stated.
The senator has been advised to file his response at the party secretariat and may choose to represent himself or appear with an advocate during any formal hearing.
Senator Khalwale has openly backed DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako, claiming his decision was driven by fairness and compassion. He accused UDA of neglecting the late Malava MP Malulu Injendi’s family following his death.
“When other MPs died, their families were supported with government jobs, but Malulu’s family was forgotten. I felt it was wrong to deny his son that chance,” Khalwale said while addressing residents on Tuesday.
He added that his support for Panyako was a message of independence for the people of Malava, saying they would vote without external pressure or interference.
Khalwale now faces possible disciplinary measures from the UDA Party if he fails to provide a satisfactory explanation. The case has reignited political tension in the Western region, with analysts saying it could deepen divisions within the ruling party ahead of the by-election.
