Six people, among them the director and co-director of Jambo Jipya Medical Clinic in Kilifi County, have been charged in Nairobi for conspiring to defraud the Social Health Authority (SHA) of over KSh 2 million.

They appeared before the Milimani Law Courts, where they faced multiple counts of fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to obtain money unlawfully.

The accused — Patrick Kimuyu Kanya, Faith Chepkirui Bii, Steven Okini Ojwang, Justine Baraka, Pauline Wanjiru, and Naida Mbevu allegedly falsified medical documents to claim payments from the SHA between November 2024 and June 2025.

According to the prosecution, the group jointly altered medical claim forms, patient records, and other supporting documents to receive payments totalling KSh 2,032,680 under the Social Health Insurance Act.

They are also accused of acquiring and using proceeds of crime, cheating, forgery, and uttering false documents to obtain money illegally from the public fund.

During the hearing, the defence lawyers raised an objection claiming that the court lacked jurisdiction over the matter. However, the presiding magistrate dismissed the argument, ruling that the Milimani Court has full authority since the matter involves criminal offences.

The court granted cash bail of KSh 200,000 to the first two accused, Patrick Kimuyu and Faith Chepkirui, while the remaining four were each released on KSh 70,000 cash bail. Each accused was also required to present a contact person before release.

The case will be mentioned again on October 21, 2025, for further hearing and directions as investigations continue into the alleged misuse of the Social Health Authority’s funds.
