  • President Ruto confirms that Ksh27 million has been disbursed to Kenyan medalists from the Tokyo 2025 Olympics.
  • Gold medalists to receive Ksh3m, silver Ksh2m, bronze Ksh1m.
  • The government will cover half the cost of houses for gold winners.
  • Kenya finished second overall with 11 medals behind the United States.

President William Ruto hosted Kenya’s athletics team at State House on Thursday, October 2, following their strong performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. He praised the athletes and confirmed that the government had already released Ksh27 million as cash rewards.

According to the President, each gold medalist received Ksh3 million, while silver medalists got Ksh2 million and bronze medalists Ksh1 million.

“In recognition of your heroic efforts, a total of Ksh27 million has already been disbursed to the medalists,” Ruto said.

Ruto went further, promising that all seven gold medalists will benefit from the affordable housing program. The government will pay half the cost of a house, while the athlete pays the remaining amount. For those unable to raise their share, a soft loan will be provided.

“Just like we did for Harambee Stars during CHAN, the government of Kenya will pay half the cost of the house of your choice,” Ruto explained.

Kenya finished second overall out of 194 nations at the championship, bagging 11 medals: 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze. The United States topped the table with 26 medals.

Among Kenya’s standout performers was Chebet, who struck double gold in the 10,000m and 5,000m races. Other gold medalists included Peres Jepchirchir, Faith Kipyegon, Faith Cherotich, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and Lilian Odira.

Kenya sent 59 athletes to Tokyo and secured another memorable finish in world athletics, maintaining its reputation as a global athletics powerhouse. The government’s recognition, through both financial rewards and housing support, is seen as a boost for the athletes ahead of future competitions.
