If you ever told me back in campus that one day I’d be cruising around in a BMW with my boys, I’d have laughed in disbelief. We were just ordinary students three broke friends surviving on instant noodles, shared rent, and pure hope. We had big dreams, of course, but dreams alone don’t pay bills.
I remember those days vividly. Life in campus wasn’t easy, but we always found a way to survive. Sometimes we’d contribute coins to buy lunch, then joke about how one day we’d “blow” and eat at five-star restaurants. We’d talk big, but deep down, we were scared of what would happen after graduation. Because the truth is getting a job in Kenya right now isn’t about hard work alone. You can have degrees, but luck and connection seem to decide your fate.
After graduation, things got tough really tough. We tarmacked across towns, carrying CVs in dusty envelopes, sitting in crowded offices waiting to be called for interviews that never came. I personally attended over ten interviews, only to be told, “We’ll get back to you.” They never did. Slowly, our morale faded.
