  • Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league matches to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
  • The move follows President William Ruto’s declaration of a seven-day national mourning period.
  • Seven Premier League fixtures set for the weekend have been postponed.
  • FKF described Raila as a great leader and passionate supporter of Kenyan football.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all football matches scheduled during the national mourning period following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the federation said the decision aligns with the government’s declaration of seven days of national mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-mast.

“Following the Government’s declaration of seven days of National Mourning in honour of the late former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended all league fixtures scheduled during this period.

We join the nation in mourning a great leader and a passionate supporter of Kenyan football. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement read.

The FKF Premier League matches originally slated for the weekend of October 18–20, 2025, have been postponed.

Among the affected fixtures were: Mara Sugar vs Bidco United, APS Bomet vs Kariobangi Sharks, Kakamega Homeboyz vs Ulinzi Stars, Tusker FC vs Murang’a Seal, KCB vs AFC Leopards, Shabana vs Mathare United, Gor Mahia vs Posta Rangers (scheduled for Mashujaa Day, Monday)

The federation said new match dates will be announced after the mourning period.

Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday morning in Kochi, India, was widely known for his love of football and support for local clubs, especially Gor Mahia FC.

His presence at local matches and contribution to sports development endeared him to fans and players alike.

FKF’s decision reflects the broader national grief and the respect the sporting community has for the late statesman, whose legacy extends beyond politics into culture and sports.
