The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has named Mr Edward Maina Muriuki as the Acting Director of Meteorological Services following the retirement of Dr David Gikungu on July 28, 2025.
The announcement was made by Dr Eng. Festus Ng’eno, the Principal Secretary in the State Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Mr Muriuki is a seasoned meteorologist with more than three decades of experience in the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).
He holds a Master of Science degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
Since joining KMD in 1991, he has held several senior roles, including Senior Assistant Director, Deputy Director of Technical and Support Services, Principal of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Regional Training Centre in Nairobi, and Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services.
In a statement, Mr Muriuki described the appointment as a key milestone in his professional journey.
“I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya. Together with our staff and partners, we aim to strengthen weather and climate service delivery across the country,” he said.
Mr Muriuki takes office at a crucial time when Kenya continues to face the impacts of climate change and rising demand for accurate weather data.
His leadership is expected to drive the implementation of the Early Warning for All initiative, a global campaign designed to boost preparedness for extreme weather events.
The Ministry expressed confidence that his vast expertise will enable the department to fulfil its mandate of safeguarding lives, protecting property, and conserving the environment through reliable meteorological information.
