The hosts stunned Portugal early when Barnabás Varga opened the scoring in the 21st minute, sending home fans into wild celebrations.
Portugal responded before halftime as Bernardo Silva rifled in a superb equaliser. After the restart, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up from the penalty spot to make it 2–1 and, in doing so, equalled the record of 39 World Cup qualifying goals.
Hungary refused to give in. Varga struck again in the 84th minute to make it 2–2, raising hopes of a famous result. But just two minutes later, João Cancelo silenced the crowd with a stunning long-range effort to seal all three points for the visitors.
The victory moved Roberto Martínez’s side to the top of Group F with six points from two games, keeping their qualification hopes strong. For Hungary, missed chances proved costly as they slipped behind in a highly competitive group.
