Alarm has gripped Kenyans after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s verified social media account was hacked and used to post a deepfake video endorsing a cryptocurrency called “Kenya Token.”

The video, which circulated on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok before being taken down, appeared to show Odinga encouraging the public to invest in the token. His team quickly disowned the clip, confirmed the account had been compromised, and urged Kenyans to ignore the message.

Blockchain analysts flagged “Kenya Token” as highly suspicious. Early reviews revealed token allocations were heavily concentrated in a few wallets and lacked any verified smart contract audits, raising concerns of a potential rug-pull scam.

Consumer-protection advocates warned that unsuspecting followers may already have lost money after being misled by the deepfake promotion.

Cybersecurity experts have called for urgent investigations to identify the hackers, trace wallet activity, and prevent further exploitation. Authorities are also expected to issue official guidance on the incident.

Social media users have been urged to remain vigilant, verify investment information only through official channels, and avoid engaging with unverified cryptocurrency offers
