  • Health committee confirms SHA disbursements to hospitals in the Central region.
  • Nyahururu Referral Hospital received Ksh170M (74% of claims).
  • Still owed Ksh61.4M pending claims + Ksh36.7M arrears from NHIF.
  • Private facilities like Nasili Maternity are also receiving up to 74% of submissions.
  • Committee to extend oversight to Nyeri County.

Hospitals in the Central region are beginning to feel the impact of the Social Health Authority (SHA) after receiving significant payouts for their services.

This was revealed by the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Health during a fact-finding mission that showed both public and private facilities are benefiting from the new health financing model.

The team, led by Mwea MP Mary Maingi and Samburu County MP Pauline Lenguris, began their oversight tour at Nyahururu County Referral Hospital in Laikipia.

So far, the hospital has received more than Ksh170 million this year, equivalent to 74% of its claims.

“We can confirm that SHA is working at Nyahururu Referral Hospital. We were impressed by the measures put in place by management to ensure timely compliance,” said Ms Maingi.

Ms Lenguris noted that SHA desks were visible in every department, with staff actively registering patients on-site.

Hospital CEO Dr. Lawrence Kamande said the facility had received Ksh6.5 million from the Primary Health Care Fund and Ksh170.3 million from the Social Health Insurance Fund. However, he pointed out that Ksh61.4 million in pending claims and Ksh36.7 million in arrears from the defunct NHIF remain unpaid.

Private hospitals are also reporting steady progress under SHA.
At Nasili Maternity Nursing Home, administrator Daniel Kariru said the facility had so far received 74% of its claims, including Ksh18.9 million from a recent payout against Ksh25 million submitted.

Sipili Maternity Nursing Home was also found to be fully compliant with SHA requirements.

The committee is expected to continue its fact-finding mission in Nyeri County to assess how the new financing model is rolling out across the region.
