Martin Kamotho, famously known as Githeri Man, shot to internet stardom during the 2017 general elections. A photograph of him eating githeri while waiting in a voting queue went viral, instantly turning him into a household name across Kenya.
His newfound fame brought promises of opportunities. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta acknowledged him, while several companies sought to associate with him for publicity. Some brands featured him in advertisements, and others pledged gifts and rewards. Sadly, many of these promises disappeared once the hype faded.
Not all opportunities vanished. Kamotho still owns a piece of land in Ngong, a gift from one company that kept its promise.
Despite this, life has been challenging. Kamotho now lives in Kayole, trying to make ends meet. Far from the glamour of viral fame, he describes himself as an ordinary citizen navigating daily life.
In a recent appeal, Kamotho reached out to well-wishers for help, whether through financial assistance or job opportunities.
“Mimi naeza taka mnisaidia badala kuenda mguu nipate kagari niendange nako,” he said, emphasising that he still can work if given a chance.
Githeri Man’s story reflects the temporary nature of viral fame in Kenya, where attention and promises often vanish, leaving ordinary people to rebuild their lives once the spotlight fades.
