The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has officially handed over a heroin consignment to the Tanzanian government. The drugs were seized at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in November 2020 after being disguised as hair braids in 56 packages. Tests confirmed the substance was 1,712.34 grams of heroin.
The handover followed a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request by Tanzania. During the ceremony, ANU Director Samwel Laboso stressed that narcotics destroy lives and fuel organised crime across the region.
Interpol NCB Director Ibrahim Jillo added that criminal networks exploit jurisdictional gaps, making strong collaborations essential.
Officials from Tanzania, including Anti-Narcotics Director Israel Makongo and ODPP representative Elisante Masaki, attended the ceremony. Isaac Isanzu, from the Tanzanian High Commission, commended DCI for professionalism, noting the handover reflected deeper bilateral ties.
The consignment was linked to Mohammed Yusuph Mzimba and Enrique Dos Santos, and was en route to the Netherlands before interception. The move comes months after detectives arrested Ali Bakari Ali in Mombasa with heroin worth Ksh1.8 million hidden under a mattress.
