  • Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has filed an appeal over refereeing decisions in Kenya’s CHAN loss to Madagascar.
  • Sonko claims two clear goals were unfairly disallowed, costing Harambee Stars their place in the tournament.
  • CAF rules make referee decisions final unless they involve mistaken identity or player eligibility, casting doubt on the appeal.
  • CAF has not yet confirmed receipt of Sonko’s petition.

Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has taken action against what he terms biased officiating in Kenya’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Madagascar.

Through a statement on his official X account, Sonko said he had formally filed an appeal challenging the disallowing of two Kenyan goals, which led to Harambee Stars’ elimination.

“I have filed an appeal against the biased referees who denied Kenya two clear goals. Let us pray and wait for CAF’s decision,” Sonko posted.

The Kenya–Madagascar tie attracted heavy criticism, with fans expressing frustration over controversial calls that went against Harambee Stars. Many accused match officials of denying Kenya a fair chance at progressing.

Analysts, however, caution that under Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, referees’ decisions on the field of play are usually final and cannot be overturned unless issues of mistaken identity or ineligible players are proven.

As of Monday, CAF had not confirmed receiving Sonko’s appeal or whether it would be subjected to review. The move has nonetheless reignited debate over the quality of refereeing in African football and the need for stronger oversight mechanisms.
