Morocco ended Tanzania’s debut campaign at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 with a 1-0 victory in Dar es Salaam on Friday, booking a spot in the semi-finals for the third time in tournament history.
In front of a packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, the Atlas Lions relied on experience to silence the spirited home crowd.
Striker Oussama Lamlaoui scored the only goal in the 65th minute, finishing calmly from close range after a clever assist from Youssef Belammari. It was Lamlaoui’s third goal of the tournament.
Until then, the match had been closely contested. Tanzania pressed hard, creating chances through Clement Mzize and Feisal Salum, but Morocco goalkeeper El Mehdi Al Harrar made key saves to keep the score level.
After falling behind, Morocco remained composed, with Mohamed Moufid and Mehdi Mchakhchekh holding firm in defence against late Taifa Stars pressure.
Tanzania continued to push, including a late header from Mzize and a shot over the bar by substitute Nassor Saadun, but could not find an equaliser. Their dream of being the first CHAN debutants since Madagascar in 2022 to reach the semi-finals ended here.
The victory reinforced Morocco’s status as a CHAN powerhouse. The two-time champions recorded seven consecutive knockout wins since 2014, showing consistency even without key defenders.
For Tanzania, co-hosting the tournament ended on a proud note. The Taifa Stars topped their group and reached the last eight for the first time, conceding only two goals in five matches, earning praise for organisation, resilience, and fan support.
Morocco now advances to the semi-finals, chasing a third CHAN crown after their 2018 and 2020 triumphs.
Tanzania’s journey may have ended, but its debut campaign has set a new benchmark for East African football.
