- The team faces Germany tomorrow at the World Championships in Thailand.
The Malkia Strikers have made a heartfelt appeal to the government, saying they have not been paid their allowances. In a video that is now trending, the players explained that Sports CS Salim Mvurya promised them the money would be released “tomorrow,” but weeks later, they are still waiting.
The team, which has raised Kenya’s flag high in both Africa and world competitions, said the situation has left them worried about their families back home, who are struggling to pay rent, school fees, and buy food.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who shared the video, blasted the government for neglecting the players.
“This is PR without delivery,” Sifuna said, adding that CS Mvurya told Parliament he had Ksh70 million to clear allowances for national teams, yet nothing has been paid.
The Malkia Strikers also revealed that part of the money from their betting sponsor has gone to kits and logistics, but not their allowances.
The team is set to face Germany tomorrow in their opening match at the World Championships in Thailand, but they remain uncertain if the government will fulfill its promise.
Their appeal has once again raised tough questions about accountability and how Kenya funds its sports teams.
