Chaos erupted in Mumias, Kakamega County, after a helicopter linked to Cleophas Malala, Deputy Party Leader of the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), landed unannounced during a high-stakes school football match.
The chopper came down right at halftime in the national secondary school finals between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, shocking players, fans, and teachers alike.
Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud confirmed that both Malala and the chopper pilot are under investigation. According to him, their actions weren’t just careless—they broke the law.
The two are expected to face multiple charges: Putting the public at risk by entering a restricted area without permission, disrupting a public function breaching aviation and education rules
“This was no emergency. It was irresponsible and against the law,” said Muhamoud.
Authorities say the sudden landing could have easily led to a deadly stampede, especially with the large number of school children present.
Police described the incident as “a total disregard for safety,” warning that political figures must not use school grounds as stages for show-off acts.
“Children’s safety is not up for debate,” added Commander Muhamoud.
So far, Malala has not responded to the backlash. As a former Kakamega Senator with strong political ties, his silence is being interpreted by some as arrogance, and by others as caution.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about political impunity and the misuse of power in public institutions. Kenyans online and offline are asking: How far is too far in the name of politics?
