Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned the violent scenes witnessed in Murang’a County, where police disrupted an event involving opposition leaders.
Speaking on Sunday, Gachagua described the attack as state-sponsored and called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible. He accused the police of being misused for political gain, claiming that President William Ruto and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen were behind the operation.
“I call for immediate arrest and arraignment of these criminals and police officers,” Gachagua declared.
“Justice will be served no matter how long it takes.”
The incident happened at Ngonda Shopping Center after a church service attended by several opposition leaders. According to Gachagua, armed goons and rogue officers descended on the crowd, inflicting injuries and causing panic.
He criticised the police response, terming it dictatorial and a clear attack on constitutional freedoms.
“This is barbaric, dictatorial, and violent against the very soul of our nation, which is our Constitution,” he stated.
Among those affected was Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who narrowly escaped harm when police lobbed teargas at their convoy. Live bullets were also reportedly fired to disperse the gathering, with several individuals injured and cars damaged.
The leaders had intended to hold public rallies across Murang’a after the church event, but police blocked a major highway, effectively stopping the planned activities.
In a strongly worded message, Gachagua questioned President Ruto’s morality, accusing him of being two-faced, attending church while authorising violence against civilians.
“How do you go to church, reconcile your conscience at the Holy Altar, then instruct your police and goons to kill Kenyans?” he asked.
This confrontation is the latest in a series of clashes within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, where Gachagua has openly disagreed with the President. As political temperatures rise, the opposition appears determined to push back against what they see as rising authoritarianism.
