Filming for SSMB29, the much-awaited film by RRR director SS Rajamouli, has been cancelled in Kenya. The decision came after days of violent youth-led protests, which made it impossible for the crew to proceed safely.

The movie, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, was scheduled to begin shooting in mid-July across Kenya’s iconic landscapes.

According to production insiders, the July 7 protests and growing instability raised serious concerns. Roadblocks, police clashes, and internet blackouts were among the key reasons the team pulled out.

“After July 7, the situation changed fast. Rajamouli sir insisted that safety comes first,” said a member of the crew.

With Kenya off the table, the team is now working to shift production to Tanzania and South Africa. Both countries offer similar views and terrain needed for the film’s action scenes.

Permit requests have already started, with plans to begin filming in South Africa before the end of July, if all goes smoothly.

SSMB29 is expected to follow Mahesh Babu in the role of a daring global explorer, in a storyline compared to Indiana Jones. This is Rajamouli’s first film after the success of RRR, and fans are eager to see what he delivers next.

Although Kenya is no longer part of the shoot, Africa remains central to the director’s vision only this time, from a more stable location.
