The football world is in mourning after Portuguese international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota tragically died in a car accident in Spain. He was 28.
His younger brother, Andre Jota, 26, also a professional footballer, died alongside him. The two were reportedly travelling together when their car crashed and burst into flames along the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria, in Zamora.
According to Spain’s Marca, the crash took place early Thursday morning. Emergency services received several calls reporting a car on fire at Kilometre 65 in the town of Cernadilla.
A statement from Castilla y León emergency responders confirmed both men were already deceased when first responders arrived. Police and firefighters were at the scene within minutes, but there was nothing they could do to save them.
The accident has stunned fans even more, as it came just 10 days after Diogo’s wedding to his long-time partner Rute Cardoso. The couple had shared pictures on Instagram with the caption: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
They had three children together, and fans were still congratulating the couple when the tragic news broke.
Diogo joined Liverpool FC from Wolves in 2020 for £41 million and quickly became a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s attack. Known for his sharp instincts, quick feet, and team-first spirit, Jota was a fan favourite -and often came through with crucial goals.
Andre, his brother, had also been rising steadily through Portugal’s lower leagues, admired for his flair and work ethic.
Liverpool FC has yet to issue an official statement, but tributes from teammates, former clubs, fans, and football authorities are flooding social media.
What was supposed to be the start of a new chapter in Jota’s life has now ended in unimaginable loss, leaving a deep void in his family and the global football community.
