Lazy Civil Servants Face Sack as Government Cracks Down on Poor Performers

Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei has issued a stern warning to government employees who continually fail to meet their performance targets. He made it clear that those who ignore set expectations will face disciplinary action, including structured sanctions or administrative punishment.

“Disregard of lawful instructions will attract formal reprimand or corrective action. Repeated failure to meet performance targets will trigger structured interventions or sanctions,” said Koskei in a statement on Wednesday, July 30.

He further directed all government ministries, departments, and agencies to urgently implement and enforce performance management systems.

“All ministries, departments, and agencies are required to cascade the framework, conduct officer briefings, obtain signed acknowledgements, and submit compliance returns within twenty-one days,” he added.

Just two weeks earlier, Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku had issued a separate directive targeting latecomers and absentee employees, terming them “ghost workers.”

“Everybody working in any government office who doesn’t report to work at the required time and those who later disappear will be treated as ghost workers,” Ruku said on July 15.

He announced that those caught will now receive show-cause letters and be forced to justify their behaviour.

“Starting today, for those who are late, we are going to get your name, personal number, as well as ID number and we will issue a show cause letter,” Ruku said.

The government is now taking performance and accountability seriously in the civil service. Non-performing and absentee employees will no longer hide behind bureaucracy.
