Former nominated Member of Parliament Catherine Nyamato has died following a short illness. She passed away on the evening of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, after being rushed to the hospital.
Nyamato, who served in Parliament between 1997 and 2002 under the late President Daniel Moi, was mourned as a fearless advocate for women’s rights.
The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) described her as a champion of gender equality and an inspiration to many.
“KEWOPA mourns the passing of former Nominated MP Hon. Catherine Nyamato, a fearless advocate for women’s rights who boldly championed gender equality, fought against FGM, and inspired generations of women leaders in Kenya,” KEWOPA said in a statement.
Former IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe, who was mentored by Nyamato, also shared a heartfelt message.
“This loss is so deep. So devastating. Hon. Catherine Nyamato took me in as her daughter when I was in university. I have lost my second mother,” said Akombe.
Veteran journalist Fred Obachi praised Nyamato’s commitment to empowering girls.
“Rest well, big sister. Your fight for the empowerment of the girl-child is well documented. Sincere condolences to the family,” he wrote.
Nyamato also served as the Secretary-General of the League of Kenya Women Voters and was known for her stand against Female Genital Mutilation and her push for women’s political inclusion.
