A boda boda operator from Rongo, Migori County, will spend the next 15 years in jail after being convicted of raping and assaulting a woman who was just trying to get home safely.

The accused, Fredrick Ojwang, lured the 50-year-old woman into trusting him on the night of March 28, 2024, only to later attack and sexually abuse her in a secluded area in Matofali village.

Court Finds Him Guilty on Two Counts

During the hearing at Rongo Law Courts, Principal Magistrate Susan Mutava handed down a 10-year sentence for rape and an additional 5 years for assault. The terms will run consecutively.

The magistrate ruled that the evidence against Fredrick was strong and consistent, and the victim’s words in court were “clear, honest, and unwavering.”

Medical and Witness Evidence Sealed His Fate

The woman had earlier travelled to Rongo town to meet a local chief, but later found herself stranded. Fredrick appeared to help, but instead led her to a dark area where he raped and beat her.

Medical reports showed signs of forced sex, while a witness, who happened to be nearby, testified to hearing screams and spotting two people near a bush, confirming part of the victim’s account.

Prosecution Presented Solid Case

The case was led by State Prosecutor Juliet Ombogo, who called four witnesses to support the charges. Their testimonies and the physical evidence convinced the court to deliver a strong sentence.
