- The nurse allegedly refused assistance over a past complaint by the patient’s family.
- The County Health Department is investigating the matter and expects a full report.
The County Government of Makueni is looking into a troubling report where a woman in labour was allegedly refused medical care by a nurse at Mavivye Little Dispensary. The woman was later assisted by a traditional birth attendant after being denied help.
According to Tabitha Mutuku, the woman’s mother-in-law, Glorious Wanja went into labour early Saturday morning. The family quickly found a boda boda and reached the dispensary by 6:00 a.m., hoping for prompt medical attention.
Nurse Accused of Holding Grudge
Shockingly, Mutuku claims the nurse who lives at the facility refused to attend to Wanja. The nurse allegedly mentioned a previous complaint made by one of Wanja’s relatives as the reason for her refusal. “She said she wouldn’t help because we had reported her before,” Mutuku recalled.
Traditional Midwife Steps In
With no medical help coming, the family turned to a nearby traditional midwife. Despite the stressful situation, both mother and baby made it through safely. However, the event has stirred anger and concern over how healthcare is handled in village clinics.
Dr. Paul Musila, the County CEC for Health, confirmed that the matter is under investigation. “We’ve sent a team to look into it, and I expect a full report by Monday morning,” he said. He promised the county will take appropriate steps based on the findings.
The incident has once again exposed the challenges women in remote areas face when seeking maternal care. While the government continues to promote hospital deliveries to curb maternal deaths, stories like this raise serious questions about patient trust and treatment.
The County Health Department has assured residents that they will act with urgency. If the nurse is found guilty of misconduct, officials say she will face disciplinary action. The aim is to restore confidence in public health facilities and protect expectant mothers.
