Isiolo Assembly Shooting Under Investigation as Victim Blames Speaker
  • Police in Isiolo are looking into a shooting that left a 26-year-old man injured after chaos followed a motion to impeach the governor.
  • The victim says the Speaker of the County Assembly shot him, though police say they’ve received no formal statement yet.
  • Two vehicles were also vandalised, and items were stolen during the unrest.
  • The Speaker has denied the claims, telling police to handle the matter.

Police in Isiolo are investigating a shooting and a series of break-ins that happened at the County Assembly on Thursday. It all unfolded just hours after MCAs moved to impeach Governor Abdi Guyo. A man, 26-year-old Barack Abdullahi, says he was shot in the ankle as leaders left the assembly grounds.

Abdullahi, who’s now recovering at Almasi Medical Centre, claims the Speaker of the Assembly fired at him from a vehicle in the official convoy. According to him, he was simply outside the compound when he noticed the Speaker inside a county-flagged car. He says he tried to run when the shot hit him.

Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed that officers are looking into both the shooting and the vandalism. However, he noted that the initial report was filed by a relative and described the shooter only as “unknown.” Mwendwa said they’re still waiting for a formal statement from Abdullahi.

Alongside the shooting, two cars were damaged, windows broken, and furniture stolen during the assembly chaos. Police say they’re treating the vandalism seriously and are collecting evidence to identify those involved.

Abdullahi’s sister, Asley Salad Mohamed, called for a transparent investigation. She said the family is shocked and wants whoever is responsible held accountable. Doctors who treated Abdullahi confirmed that the bullet was lodged in his ankle bone and appeared to have been fired from a small firearm at close range.

Speaker Denies Allegations

When reached for comment via WhatsApp, Speaker Mohamed Roba pushed back on the accusations. “The burden of proof lies with the accuser,” he said, adding that police should be left to do their work.

Police have not yet made any arrests. Investigators say they are still piecing together what happened, and they plan to question more witnesses, including assembly staff and others who were present that day.
