  • Former DP Rigathi Gachagua says he had nothing to do with the violence during the June 25 protests.
  • He blames the Ministry of Interior for failing to stop the looting and destruction.
  • Gachagua says the Gen Z movement is leaderless and cannot be controlled by politicians.
  • He questions why no suspects have been arrested despite clear signs of organised violence.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims that he bankrolled or directed criminal groups involved in the June 25 protests. Speaking during an NTV interview, he said it’s misleading to suggest one person could coordinate unrest in more than 20 countries at once.

Gachagua shifted blame to the Interior Ministry, accusing CS Kipchumba Murkomen of standing by while chaos unfolded. He argued that the police and intelligence agencies should have seen the attacks coming and stopped them.

Where Was NIS?

He questioned the role of the National Intelligence Service, saying they either missed the signs or knowingly let things slide. “If this was planned, how did NIS not act?” he asked. “And if they did know, why did they let it happen?”

Gachagua claimed that destruction only started after 6 p.m., long after peaceful protesters had gone home. He noted that while several young demonstrators were arrested or harmed, none of the actual criminals were caught.

According to Gachagua, the Gen Z movement remained largely peaceful and had no link to politics. He believes rogue elements were sent in later to damage property and shift the blame.

He wrapped up by telling Murkomen not to take Kenyans for fools. “You can’t say goons were paid by me but still fail to arrest even one of them,” Gachagua said. “People know the truth. The real violence came later—and it was allowed to happen.”
