China First, Finland Next: Mudavadi Kicks Off Africa-Focused Diplomatic Tour

  • Musalia Mudavadi arrives in Changsha, China, for a key FOCAC follow-up summit.
  • The meeting brings together all 54 African states and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
  • He will also attend top trade forums before heading to Finland for the Kultaranta Talks.

Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS, Musalia Mudavadi, has touched down in Changsha City, China. His mission is to represent Kenya at a ministerial gathering focused on tracking progress made under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

This meeting brings together representatives from all 54 African countries and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to review development pledges made in previous engagements.

Strengthening Old Ties, Forging New Opportunities

Speaking through his Press Director Jacob Ng’etich, Mudavadi said the goal is to boost Kenya-China diplomatic and economic relations that have stood strong for over 60 years. His visit comes shortly after President William Ruto’s trip to Beijing in May, which saw several high-level agreements signed—among them the extension of the SGR from Kisumu and the expansion of the Nairobi-Malaba highway.

China’s $50 Billion Pledge Still in Motion

During the last FOCAC summit, President Xi Jinping committed more than $50 billion in support to African nations, focusing on infrastructure, agriculture, technology, and green energy. Chinese officials now say this current meeting will refine how those pledges are delivered and track the pace of their implementation.

“This partnership is at its strongest ever,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian, affirming Beijing’s ongoing support for shared development goals.

Beyond Politics: Trade and Investment in Focus

Mudavadi’s stay in China also includes participation in two major trade gatherings: the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo and the Chongqing-Africa Investment Forum. Both platforms aim to deepen cooperation in business, technology transfer, and investment.

Next Stop: Finland

Once done in China, Mudavadi is expected to fly to Finland where he’ll represent President Ruto at the Kultaranta Talks in Naantali. The high-profile event brings together global leaders and experts for strategic discussions on international peace, security, and cooperation.
