WhatsApp Unveils Music Feature on Status Updates for Kenyan Users

  • WhatsApp now allows users to add music to status updates using a music icon.
  • The update was first available to iPhone users, but is now active on Android in Kenya.
  • The feature helps users express moods through music clips.
  • WhatsApp was the only Meta platform without music in status posts—until now.
  • Other recent features include video call effects and chat filters for organizing messages.

WhatsApp users in Kenya can now spice up their status updates with background music. In a recent update issued on Friday, May 2, the platform announced the launch of a music feature accessible through the music note icon when creating a status.

Expressing Feelings Through Music

According to WhatsApp, users can now match their status with the right tune. Whether you’re sharing a memory or just a random moment, tapping the music icon will let you add a sound that suits your vibe.

iPhone First, Android Now Catches Up

Though the feature initially rolled out for iPhone users, Android users in Kenya have now been included in the update. This move ensures more users can enjoy a musical twist to their daily updates.

Closing the Gap with Other Meta Apps

Before this upgrade, WhatsApp was the only popular Meta-owned platform that lacked music on stories or status features. The update now aligns it with Instagram and Facebook, both of which already support music features.

More Upgrades: Video Effects and Chat Filters

WhatsApp has also added visual effects and backgrounds for video calls. Additionally, the chat filter option introduced in March 2025 allows users to easily find important conversations by grouping them based on type or urgency.

How to Access the New Features

To use the music or filter feature, simply go to the Status or Chat tab and tap the respective icons. WhatsApp has emphasized that these changes are part of improving user experience and making communication more fun and organized.
