“Time to Let Go”: Onyonka Urges Raila to Exit Active Politics Gracefully

  • Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has praised Raila Odinga’s political journey but says it’s time for him to retire.
  • He said the ODM-UDA cooperation has angered many supporters, including his own voters.
  • Onyonka noted that Raila’s legacy is already secured and continuing may only harm it.
  • He confirmed his support for Fred Matiang’i’s 2027 presidential bid.
  • Despite his criticism of Raila, he will not quit ODM or seek a fresh mandate.

Raila’s Place in History Is Safe, Says Onyonka

Senator Richard Onyonka has openly called on Raila Odinga to step away from the political spotlight. While speaking during a live show on May 5, he said Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic progress is unmatched and enough to secure him a place in the country’s history.

ODM-UDA Deal Sparks Discontent

The Kisii senator expressed concern over Raila’s decision to join hands with President Ruto under the ODM-UDA working arrangement. Onyonka said this political partnership has disappointed loyal supporters, especially young people and those in his home region.

Raila Should Exit Before the Applause Ends

“Raila is a legend, no doubt. But like every great dancer, there’s a right time to leave the stage,” said Onyonka. He warned that staying too long in politics could cause Raila to face the same negative reactions he got after the 2018 handshake with Uhuru Kenyatta.

Onyonka Backs Matiang’i, Not Planning to Quit ODM

Despite publicly differing with Raila, Onyonka made it clear he’s not leaving the ODM party. He dismissed the idea of resigning and re-contesting his seat, saying it would be unnecessary and expensive for taxpayers. “We’re disagreeing over direction, not loyalty,” he explained.

Playing Key Role in Matiang’i’s Presidential Team

The senator has now become a key part of Fred Matiang’i’s political movement. On May 4, just a day before his public remarks, Onyonka accompanied Matiang’i to visit former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home—a meeting that signals early alliance building ahead of 2027.
