  • A new poll by TIFA shows many Kenyans believe Raila will run for president again in 2027
  • 28% think he’ll return to the opposition and be a candidate
  • 23% expect him to back President Ruto
  • 18% say he may support another opposition figure
  • 14% believe he will exit politics completely
  • The poll also reveals that more than half of Kenyans don’t support the broad-based government

A fresh poll by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) has brought back the spotlight on Raila Odinga’s future in politics, showing that many Kenyans believe he is not done yet. According to the survey, 28% of those asked said they expect Raila to bounce back into opposition politics and once again vie for the presidency in 2027.

These findings come at a time when Raila’s current partnership with President William Ruto, aimed at forming a more inclusive government, has left the public wondering if the opposition chief is stepping away from his usual political path or just preparing for another round.

Others shared different expectations. 23% think he’ll side with Ruto’s re-election, while 18% say he might support another opposition figure. A smaller portion, 14%, believe Raila might retire from active politics, and 16% said they were unsure about what he might do next.

Mixed Feelings About Unity Government

Apart from Raila’s political direction, the survey also looked at what Kenyans think about the current broad-based government, which was introduced to promote unity and bring more voices to national leadership. But according to the results, public support is divided.

54% of those polled said they do not support the power-sharing arrangement, while only 22% are in favour of it. The remaining 25% said they have no strong opinion either way.

With Raila’s next move still unclear, and public confidence in the government setup appearing shaky, Kenya’s political scene remains tense and unpredictable. As 2027 nears, all eyes will remain on Raila—and how his final decision could shape the race.
