Inspector General Douglas Kanja has announced a plan to introduce an online recruitment system for the National Police Service (NPS), aimed at fighting corruption and making the selection process smoother. He said the new process will ensure that only the most qualified applicants are allowed to move forward to the physical recruitment stage.
Overcrowding at Field Centres to Be Tackled
Kanja pointed out that police recruitment has always attracted large numbers of applicants, making it hard to manage and leaving room for possible loopholes. The online process will help screen candidates in advance, so that only shortlisted names proceed to the field exercise.
“The crowds that turn up for recruitment are too many. We must end this by using technology. Once it’s automated, those loopholes close,” said Kanja.
A Step Towards Modern Policing
The online tool—known as the Police Recruitment System—was presented by the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to IG Kanja at Jogoo House on May 2. This move follows a broader call for digitization of police services.
What the Online System Offers
According to Peter Leley, the NPSC CEO, the platform will tackle common problems such as delays, data errors, bribery, and repetitive records. The system is expected to make the entire process transparent, secure, and efficient, giving every applicant a fair chance.
It will also reduce costs, allow digital reporting of misconduct, and standardize the recruitment experience across all counties.
Digital Future for the NPS
While supporting the NPSC proposal, Kanja emphasized that automation across the board will help position the NPS as a reliable and modern security institution. He stated that clean, open recruitment is the foundation for professionalism in service delivery.
Recruitment into the police service is scheduled to return in 2025, after a three-year suspension. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed.
